Coin Press, 1880s

Striking currency

The Perth Mint

This coin press was made in the 1880s by Heaton and Son Ltd in Birmingham, England. It was likely used to make sovereigns at The Royal Mint in London prior to being shipped to Perth to do the same task.

The automatic feed mechanism enabled a speed of 105 strikes a minute. At each strike the press exerted a force of about 60 tonnes.

After 1931, this press struck pennies and halfpennies, then one and two cent coins. The Perth Mint last struck coins for circulation in 1983.
