The importance of weighing
The Perth Mint
Metal is carefully weighed at all stages of the coining process - in a Mint it is important that all metal stock is accounted for! These scales, made in Brimingham by W. & T. Avery, were used to check the weight of bronze alloy bars that were to be turned into pennies and half pennies. The bronze alloy bars cast in the Melting House were then sent to the Coining Room. Here, they were flattened into thin strips in the Rolling Mills to prepare for cutting into penny and half penny size coin blanks.
