In 1984 an Australian Precious Metals Coin Program was proposed that aimed to make Perth one of the major bullion centres in the world. It was approved by the Australian Government and in 1986 this Australian Nugget Proof Coin Series was launched. It returned The Perth Mint to its original purpose as a maker of fine gold coins.

In 1987 the first bullion series was released featuring the same designs. Australia was the first country in the world to create a series of gold bullion coins that featured four different designs and were made to a high purity of 99.99%. The Australian Nugget was a great commercial success. After just one year, Australia captured 10 per cent of the world gold bullion coin market.
