Going for gold!
The Perth Mint
On display in the Special Occasions: Events to be remembered display case.
The manufacture of the medals for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games was a joint undertaking by The Perth Mint and the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra. The Perth Mint produced the Gold Victory Medals.
The Gold Victory Medals for the 2000 Sydney Olympics were designed by sculptor and designer Wojciech Pietranik. The medals are in keeping with Olympic tradition, featuring Nike, the Goddess of Victory, on the obverse side. The reverse image represents the Sydney Opera House meeting the Olympic flame.
The gold for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Victory Medals was donated by OPHIR gold 2000, a joint project of the communities of Orange, Cabonne and Blayney in central western New South Wales. Ophir, near Orange, was the site of Australia’s first payable goldfield in 1851. A total of 750 gold medals were made from 99.99% pure silver, each plated in six grams of gold.
The medal ribbon was supplied by The Woolmark Company and features Australian Merino superfine wool.
