Creature Focus: Porcupine Ray

Scientific Name: Urogymnus asperrimus

Habitat: Seagrass beds and coral reefs close to shore

Conservation Status: Vulnerable

Threats: Climate change, fishing

Researcher Note:

While finishing a dive, a very rare porcupine ray swam up to us. It was the first time the team had ever seen one. There were only two or three records of this species in WA before this.
