Life in the Great Barrier Reef

<h4>Set sail on a visual journey through maritime history in this photographic exhibition celebrating ships and boats from across the globe.</h4>Inspired by a lifelong fascination with all things nautical, including his father’s service in the Merchant Navy during World War II, David Nicolson brings together striking images gathered through years of travel and photography.This exhibition traces the stories, craftsmanship, and adventure of vessels across the ages — from the Pharaoh’s Solar Barge of 2500 BCE to the aircraft carriers and battleships of World War II, and from elegant Dutch sailing ships to the great ocean liners.<h2>About David Nicolson</h2>David Nicolson is a retired Electronics Engineer having graduated from UWA in 1972. In the 1970’s and 80’s he served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve, first in the engineering branch and subsequently in naval intelligence. To further is career, he worked in the defence industry in Scotland before returning to Australia to start his own electronics company. He retired in 2000 and spends most of his time on photographic projects.

This epic story of love and loss, fear and courage, and the long-awaited resolution of a mystery—kept alive by those who never gave up hope—is brought to life by an outstanding cast: Myles Pollard, Tom O’Sullivan and Georgia Unsworth. When HMAS Sydney IIwas sunk by the disguised German Raider HSK Kormoran in November 1941, it took with it, along with her entire crew of 645 men, the hopes and dreams of a nation as the war arrived on our doorstep. Among Sydney’s crew was a young Western Australian Able Seaman, Allan Rowe. Recently wed, Allan had only just learned that he was to be a father. For 66 years, Allan’s wife, Jessie, and their daughter, Ellen, held onto hope that one day the wreck of Sydney would be found.In 2008, through the persistence of the volunteer Directors of the Finding Sydney Foundation, that long-held dream finally came true.Journey across oceans and eras as we chart the loss of Australia’s famous warship and the long search that finally revealed her resting place. <h2>Join in stories, songs, craft and much more for little learners with experienced Museum educators.</h2>Come along for a heartwarming program of stories, songs, craft and fun – specially designed for early learners and led by members of the Learning &amp; Engagement team at the WA Maritime Museum. Each Tuesday Storytime we will share some delightful picture books that explore a variety of themes. Together we’ll enjoy stories, play games and get hands-on with craft. Meet our delightful puppet friend Stella the Storyteller, who will help introduce the group and celebrate our themes. We will dive into the fascinating world of marine life, discovering the incredible creatures that live beneath the sea. Along the way, we’ll celebrate the excitement of exploring beaches, reefs, and rivers, where young adventurers can find these animals.

Come along and meet some of DBCA’s Parks and Wildlife staff to get the low-down from them on working in the conservation and natural sciences sector.In this session, you’ll hear from the River Guardians science communicator, a marine ranger, and wetland and estuarine scientist. They’ll share their stories, how they got started, and the pathways that led them to where they are today. You’ll also learn about the skills, experiences, and opportunities, like DBCA&#39;s graduate program that can help you follow a similar path. If you love nature and want to explore future career possibilities, join us at the WA Maritime Museum ... you might just discover your dream job!Adult supervision is required for children 17 years and under, no ticket required for adult accompanying a child.This activity is suitable for children and youth 14 - 25 years of age. Tickets must be purchased for participating children/youth only.The ages for each activity are in place for your children to get the most out of their activity. Nearer to Nature: Pathways to Conservation workshop

<h4>Join us during Science Week for some quality crafternoon fun with our Ghost Nets crafting workshop. </h4>Learn about the important cleanup that can be done by environmental groups that retrieve stranded ghost nets and plastic waste from both ocean and beach environments. Transform this plastic waste from ocean wildlife hazard to art-making materials and enjoy some companionable time with others along the way.Basic sewing skills will be required for this workshop, especially patience. This is not a process that is suitable for most children, as it is a slow burn with only very gradual outcomes. Children over 10 years are welcome and will need an accompanying adult for guidance and assistance.

<h4>From turquoise coastlines to ancient red gorges, Emma Thomson’s paintings celebrate Western Australia’s diverse beauty, inviting us to pause, reconnect with nature, and revisit cherished memories.</h4>This exhibition celebrates the remarkable diversity of Western Australia, from the windswept shores of our coastline to the rugged beauty and rich ochre landscapes of Karijini and El Questro. Though vastly different, these places share the power to leave a lasting impression, inviting us to slow down, reconnect with nature, and reflect on the memories they inspire. <h2>About the artist</h2>Emma Thomson is a Perth-based artist known for her atmospheric seascapes and Western Australian landscapes. Through her work, she captures the shifting qualities of light, movement and colour found along the State’s coastline and diverse natural environments.

Maritime Open Day for Science Week 2026

This event has now finished. See <a href="whats-on">what&#39;s on at the Museum &gt;</a><h4>Climate heating threatens the future of Western Australia&#39;s amazing coral reefs, but science teams are working on local initiatives to slow degradation until the global causes are addressed.</h4>Join marine scientist Dr James Gilmour for an update on the current science work that is centred on the fabulous reefs found in Western Australia&#39;s natural heritage. Western Australia has an amazing diversity of coral reefs that are among the world’s healthiest. Our reefs have escaped many human pressures, but impacts from climate heating and coral bleaching have increased in recent years. A marine heatwave in 2025 caused unprecedented impact across WA, affecting even our healthiest and most remote coral reefs. Relentless increases in global temperatures will cause more frequent and severe impacts to our coral reefs until the global causes are addressed. In the meantime, scientists, managers, government, community, industry and philanthropy across WA are working together to slow reef degradation locally, exploring a combination of strategies to increase coral cover and diversity.<h2>About the Presenter</h2>Dr James Gilmour has undertaken extensive research on northern Australian coral reefs. His current work focuses on coral communities across the oceanic reefs of north-western Australia, as well as nearshore reefs in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions. James leads monitoring programs at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), overseeing the collection of detailed data on reef condition and coral populations to better understand how these ecosystems change over time. After studying at James Cook University in north Queensland, I worked with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Aquarium, James Cook University and the Museum of Tropical Queensland. I then completed my PhD with the University of Western Australia and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). I have worked at AIMS WA and studied WA coral reefs for over two decades, collaborating with industry, universities, government, tourism and Indigenous communities. My current research focuses on reefs from Ningaloo to the oceanic atolls on the edge of the continental shelf. We conduct large monitoring and research projects that assess impact and recovery from multiple pressures, while increasingly exploring ways to slow degradation. See <a href="whats-on">what&#39;s on at the Museum &gt;</a><h3>What if a shipwreck could tell us as much about the ocean today as the people who sailed it centuries ago?</h3>Join Charlotte Jarvis from the National Maritime Museum, Netherlands for a discussion into the link between natural and cultural heritage and how maritime museums can help us better understand, and care for, our marine environments.For decades, maritime archaeologists have studied underwater cultural heritage, especially shipwrecks, to learn more about the people of the past and our historic connections to water. More recently, archaeologists and ecologists have begun looking more closely at the environments surrounding these shipwrecks – helping to develop the emerging field of maritime heritage ecology.As the ocean faces growing pressures from climate change and other environmental threats, this broader understanding is becoming more important than ever. The UN Decade for Ocean Science and Sustainability (2021-2030) is encouraging new approaches to marine research, bringing different fields of study together and placing greater emphasis on &#39;ocean literacy&#39;.Maritime museums and exhibitions have long told stories of human exploration, trade and life at sea, but the ocean itself has often remained in the background. By combining storytelling around shipwrecks and shipwreck ecology, museums can not only offer a deeper picture of the ocean and its heritage, but also inspire people to care about its future.<h4>About your presenter</h4>Charlotte Jarvis is a maritime historian and archaeologist based at the National Maritime Museum, Netherlands, researching topics from early modern wooden shipbuilding to threats to Ocean Heritage. She holds degrees in maritime archaeology from Texas A&amp;M University and history from Durham University and specialises in bringing archaeological research into the museum’s exhibitions. She has research and excavation experience across the Atlantic world and her previous research included alcohol consumption at sea and the archaeological footprint of Dutch bottles on shipwrecks; superstition at sea; women’s work on early modern Dutch shipyards; and marine climate change with an interest in early modern sailors&#39; beliefs and how we can use history to inform environmental policies. She is part of the Ocean Decade Heritage Network, the Advisory Council for Underwater Archaeology, the International Congress of Maritime Museums, and works with the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage.This lecture and curatorial exchange visit is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands

Come hang out with Kathryn Lefroy, the author and screenwriter behind Whale Shark Jack and find out!</h3>She’ll spill the secrets: What’s hard about writing for a book? What’s different when you’re writing for a movie? What’s the weirdest thing that happened on set? There will be laughs, behind-the-scenes stories and interactive activities so bring your imagination, your questions and your creative chaos!This event will take place in front of the Maritime Museum’s new exhibition of Whale Shark Jack. Totally Lit: Meet Whale Shark Jack and his creator

<h3>By arrangement with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, Totally Lit are delighted to offer this screening of Whale Shark Jack.</h3>Sarah lives on a boat with her parents, who research whale sharks. Her only friend is a whale shark named Jack, who Sarah rescued when he was a pup. But following a tragic accident, mum and Sarah move to the coastal town of Exmouth. Desperate to return to her old life, Sarah pegs all her hopes on Jack, certain that when his migration brings him back to Exmouth, mum will take her out on the boat again.
